WPC Door Frame Thickness Guide: Choosing Frames for 100–300 mm Walls

 Published on: 2026-08-31

Why WPC Door Frame Thickness Matters

When buyers compare WPC doors, most attention goes to the door leaf: its density, surface finish, color and waterproof performance. In an actual project, however, the door frame is just as important. A frame that does not match the finished wall thickness can create visible gaps, uneven architraves, difficult installation and unnecessary site modification.

For apartments, hotels, villas, hospitals and commercial buildings, wall thickness may range from approximately 100 mm to 300 mm. The correct WPC door frame should cover the finished wall neatly, provide stable fixing points and leave enough tolerance for installation. This guide explains what importers, contractors and project managers should confirm before placing an order.

Three Measurements That Should Not Be Confused

Before discussing frame size, separate these three dimensions:

  • Wall thickness: the total thickness of the finished wall, including plaster, tile, stone or decorative panels.
  • Door opening size: the structural width and height of the opening before the complete door set is installed.
  • Door leaf thickness: the thickness of the moving door panel. It is not the same as the frame depth.

A common purchasing mistake is to provide only the opening width and height. The supplier can prepare the leaf and outer frame dimensions, but cannot determine the correct frame depth without the finished wall thickness.

WPC Door Frame Options for 100–300 mm Walls

Finished Wall Thickness Typical Application Recommended Approach Points to Confirm
100–120 mm Light partitions, standard interior walls Standard fixed frame where dimensions are consistent Plaster or tile allowance and architrave coverage
130–160 mm Apartments, villas and hotel rooms Fixed or adjustable WPC frame depending on site tolerance Finished thickness at the top, middle and bottom
170–200 mm Thicker masonry walls and service areas Customized frame depth or a split-frame solution Joint position, fixing method and visible finish
210–250 mm Commercial buildings and walls with additional finishes Project-specific frame structure Frame stability, packing volume and installation sequence
260–300 mm Special construction details or very thick walls Customized extended frame, subject to technical review Section drawing, reinforcement and site tolerance

These ranges are a practical starting point rather than a substitute for project drawings. Final frame structure should be confirmed according to the wall material, opening condition, door size, hardware and installation method.

Fixed Frame or Adjustable Frame?

Fixed WPC Door Frame

A fixed frame is produced to a specified depth. It is suitable when wall thickness is consistent across the project and the finished dimensions are already known. Its advantages include a clean structure, straightforward installation and predictable material usage.

The limitation is tolerance. If one wall is 145 mm and another is 158 mm, a single fixed frame size may not cover both neatly. Installers may need extra fillers or site finishing, which can reduce the visual quality of the completed doorway.

Adjustable or Split WPC Door Frame

An adjustable or split-frame system can accommodate a range of wall thicknesses. It is useful for renovation projects, multi-building developments or sites where plaster and tile thickness vary. The exact adjustment range depends on the frame profile, so buyers should request a section drawing and physical sample before mass production.

For very thick walls, “adjustable” does not always mean that one standard profile can cover every dimension. A customized extension or combined structure may still be required.

How to Measure Finished Wall Thickness Correctly

  1. Measure after finishes are confirmed. Include plaster, ceramic tile, stone, wall panels or other surface layers.
  2. Check several positions. Measure near the top, middle and bottom on both sides of the opening. Record the minimum and maximum values.
  3. Do not assume every opening is identical. Sample multiple rooms, floors and buildings, especially in large projects.
  4. Confirm the finished floor level. Floor tiles, screed or carpet can affect the final opening height and undercut.
  5. Provide drawings and a door schedule. Mark opening size, wall thickness, door swing, handing, lock position and special hardware.

If the project is still at the structural stage, provide both the current measurement and the expected finish build-up. This gives the door supplier enough information to recommend a suitable tolerance.

Architrave Coverage and Finished Appearance

The architrave, also called casing or trim, covers the joint between the frame and the wall. Its width must be sufficient to hide normal installation gaps, but it should not interfere with nearby corners, switches, skirting boards or built-in furniture.

For thick or uneven walls, confirm whether the architrave is installed on both sides, how it connects to the frame and whether the same color and surface finish are available. A complete sample corner is more useful than judging the frame and trim as separate pieces.

Other Details That Affect Frame Selection

  • Door size and weight: Larger leaves and heavier hardware require reliable hinge fixing and suitable frame reinforcement.
  • Hardware preparation: Confirm hinge type, lock body, strike plate, door closer and any access-control components.
  • Moisture exposure: WPC is a practical choice for humid interior environments, but joints, wall conditions and installation materials still need correct treatment.
  • Fire or acoustic requirements: Standard WPC interior doors should not be assumed to meet a certified fire or sound rating. Specify the required test standard before quotation.
  • Packing and transport: Deeper frames use more material and occupy more volume. Custom packing should protect long profiles and decorative surfaces during container transport.

Project Checklist Before Ordering

Send the following information to your WPC door supplier:

  • Quantity by door type and room
  • Structural opening width and height
  • Minimum and maximum finished wall thickness
  • Door leaf size, thickness, color and surface finish
  • Frame profile and architrave style
  • Opening direction and handing
  • Lock, hinge and accessory requirements
  • Installation method and required tolerance
  • Project drawings, sample approval process and delivery schedule

For large orders, approve a complete door-set sample before production. The sample should include the leaf, frame, architraves, hinges, lock and finish. A trial installation can reveal measurement or assembly issues that are difficult to see in a drawing alone.
